I don't remember learning anything substantial in school, so I don't know what kind of person I would have become if not for the fact that they were into reading and other intellectual pursuits. I am with you on the draft thing, I recently read a bunch of mine and realized I had never published them for the same reason: fear of how raw they were!

As far as the honesty of schools...that's something that concerns me greatly. My partner and I have debated homeschooling our child for this very reason. However, I feel it will do her more good to go into public schools and have that shared experience, and then supplement her education at home. As parents, we certainly can do something about the spread of misinformation, even if it's only on the homefront!

Thank you for sharing with us at #mommymeetupmondays!Brandyn Blazehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12364919826813976813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-298420976025938487.post-61609300949794386972015-10-13T10:21:28.904-04:002015-10-13T10:21:28.904-04:00Jovina glad you enjoyed the post. I really like your list of what parents can do. As a former middle school teacher, I always tried to challenge my students to question what they read or hear, to observe and do their own research to make up their own opinions. Students and parents can and should question their teachers, schools and school boards, but it is important to be respectful. Often teachers are not given the choice in what they teach or what materials they are allowed to use. I know it feels frustrating when kids believe they were lied to, but often it is not with malicious intent. The pilgrim story is an important part of our country's history - we teach small children about the first thanksgiving, but in reality we know that white settlers killed so many native americans, either intentionally or through disease and starvation. Small children are not ready to learn those facts yet. As parents you can decide when is appropriate to add more mature and difficult parts of the story when your child is ready. ALL students should be taught to think for themselves, your post is a great reminder. All we can do for sure is try to have a healthy balance and start with our little ones as young as possible. I always encouraged my daughter to question and research as often as possible and I am lucky to see her reap the rewards today. Btw I printed out your illustration of me and have it in my office everyone gets a kick out of it and finds it cute :) chat again soon I hope :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02431847084321147125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-298420976025938487.post-31218772604638525392015-10-11T15:25:47.786-04:002015-10-11T15:25:47.786-04:00Oh Mari, great article, thoughtful and well writte...Oh Mari, great article, thoughtful and well written. My husband and I have talked a lot about embracing the fear and doing it anyway. It's terrifying opening up whether as a writer or a parent. I believe in being as honest as possible without deliberately provoking or hurting others. As for talking to children, I believe in explaining things as honestly as I can but in a way that helps them understand (they are 3 and 5). However, I absolutely believe in keeping it as real as possible when educating my children, always question everything, and personal history? Depends on with whom you're sharing it with some have a tendency to use it against you. johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16253020587645437600noreply@blogger.com
