Are some APP's encouraging Cyber bullying?

Happy cloudy Sunday here for me in NYC. Spring is on its way I am holding on to that thought for sure but in the meantime in my radar of News...
Well not sure how much in the news this post I'm about to share is or has been but being that I watch Good Morning America as I get ready for work and my daughter loves the movie Mean Girls, this was a great topic of conversation the other morning.
I have only watched that movie once and it was upon the request of my sunshine. She wanted me to sit with her on a rerun of it some time ago.

I could take it or leave it but I got the message. A Burnbook is used in this movie as a way to write really ugly and "mean" rumors and comments about other girls, so to have an app named after it by CEO Jonathan Lucas and to actually have people who are using it says a lot about our society for sure.

It doesn't take courage to sit and send out hateful messages anonymously. I doesn't take courage to pick on others if they have no idea who you are but it does take courage to stand up for things like this and put a stop to them.
How much of a coward are you to bully someone without identifying yourself? Would you not say the same thing in there face?

I remember the days of meet me after school and we will put an end to all this "beef". I remember the days when you told people off to their face and things went from there. Now we use our phones, our computers and even worse our parents guns.

Again who is teaching these kids that bullying is a right of passage? That it is ok to do it, that everyone does it? Who is teaching these kids that being a coward is cool?
My mother never encouraged fighting but she didn't raise me to back down either. She taught me to warn first and fight later. She taught me to use my words as a means to come to mutual understanding, not to bring someone down.
My mother taught me to make sure that if I said something I could back it up, in other words if you talk crap be prepared to get knocked on your A**.

These are the same lessons I taught my daughter. How to have character, how to resolve issues in a fair manner, how to defend herself if necessary at all times.
But how do we defend ourselves from those that are hiding? How do we continue to shine an even brighter light on this issue?

I say we can start at home and at an early age. Even a 3 year old can be a bully. When our children exhibit aggressive behavior let's address it. Everything is not funny or will be grown out of.
-Communication: constant show of examples about how using our words poorly reflects on us and hurts others. Constant talks and exchange of ideas, open lines to express ourselves respectfully.
-Monitoring: now I am not into monitoring per say but if I am paying for your phone etc...I do have the right to ask about the types of apps you have on there. We can surely hold discussions about what sort of material I expect you to stay away from. If you build early great lines of communication, there will be no need for monitoring.
-Consequences: if our children engage in poor behavior they should be held accountable. Of course apologizing would be great but words are empty if no loss is experienced. So take away privileges, have them volunteer in an activity or program in relation to their behavior. Stand your ground and let them know that differences should always be respected even if we don't agree.

If our kids are the ones on the other end and are being bullied, no matter how small it may seem, she doesn't like my shirt, he made fun of my haircut whatever, talk about it. Allow them to express their feelings and let your kids know you support and will stick up for them as best you can. Look into the matter, speak with the teachers, the parents etc...but say and do something.

I am including link to story and I am also sharing link to interesting Curt Schilling story and how he dealt with similar bully issues online with his daughter. Let's talk, tell me what you think.

My Top Five Social Media tips

Ah Social Media! A phrase we hear so much about today. The power it holds.
Are we becoming addicted to Social Media forms and its uses?

I want to make the most of my time on Social Media.
I don't just want to be on, join it, or use it "just because".
I want to use these tools with a clear purpose.
As I was going through my emails today I noticed several things, first I want to share I have 3 emails.
One is for personal use and two for business, so it's a little time consuming when you have to sort through some crap to get to the treasures. I have a system, I check my emails 3 times a day and invest about 40 minutes tops. If you don't grab my attention on preview, I'm gone. Which led me to think of this post.

I've shared in the past my experience on Face Book facebook-who-cares-i-dont and my lack of interest for it still today.
I really don't want to crap on this form of connecting and networking but it just isn't for me.

So what are my Five tips?

-Options: Give your readers and potential followers at least three options in which they can follow you. You can't go wrong with the Email option so at least add that.
-Sharing: Here again provide at least three options and don't make me have to sign up or fill out some form to do so. Take a few extra seconds and go to your settings to set up your restrictions but don't make me jump through hoops to leave you a comment or to share something good you have posted. This is for your benefit.
-Pictures: If you want to share personal pictures, moments etc...make sure they are in good taste and clear. Blurry pictures, extra dirty kitchen, disheveled people, bathroom pics, are not attractive. These pictures will be out there forever, do you really want to show a crazy looking picture of your kitchen mess to prove a point of before and after? Does everyone need to see your kid sitting on the potty?
-Less is More: You really don't have to let us know what you are doing every second of the day.
Give me time to miss you and wonder what you are up to.
-Monetizing: For those who want to earn some cash while they Blog, great for you! But please don't just endorse everything that comes your way. When we choose to endorse something our reputation is attached, please think long term and be selective. Also please make sure your page looks appealing. A Blog page filled with pop ups and ads does not make me want to stop and read what you have to say or even look at what your selling. Think classy, think high end. Do you shop at a store that looks like a Hurricane hit it?

What do you think? Any tips on Social Media you would like to share?

FACEBOOK, who cares? I Don't.

You don't have a Facebook? Your not on Facebook? OMG!!!!

NO! I don't and I don't feel I am missing anything so don't feel bad for me, thank you.

This is what I had to say to a woman the other day, she almost fell off her chair. She proceeded to say how she was addicted to Facebook, couldn't live without it.
Really now? Well how sad I am for you.

Two sides to every story. I had a Facebook account over three (3) years ago. I reconnected with loads of old H.S. friends, some family and even made new friends.
That is great and that is fun for many but for ME it wasn't.
After a while I grew tired of the pictures at the bar or at the pool or of the nails.
I grew tired of the bashing of the "other" so called friends, of the over share of their personal lives and all the drama as it played out on every feed.
I grew tired of the countless status updates that would pop up.

Now if your on Facebook to build a network for your business, or to actually reconnect with loved ones and build from there, wonderful. If your intent is to stay close to those that you care about but don't live near you, great. If it brings about actual reunions then more blessings to you. That is an awesome reason to have Facebook but if you are there to just follow others while they live their lives than heck noooooo!

Facebook taught me I cherish connection, I enjoy human contact and hearing actual voices. I learned I enjoy reunions but not over a screen. I learned I enjoy making plans to make physical visits when and where possible.
Again I say two sides. I am very well aware that some physical connections are just not possible for some. I also respect the numerous uses that Facebook provides I just question some peoples honest intent in using it. I respect and support the generous information it provides on a large scheme on a daily and I would never exclude any means of gathering or giving information. I just like to bring a different perspective to any table.

I also don't understand why some businesses, sites and blogs only allow you to like or follow via Facebook.
I mean honestly, why cut off those that choose not to go that route? Options people, options.
If I would like to try a free sample of your product I can only sign up via Facebook? If you wrote a great piece on topic that caught my attention, I can only visit you on Facebook? smh..........

What do you think? Did I present a fair observation or did it come across as one sided?
