Parents don't have all the Answers

Happy Wednesday! A lovely evening of Pretty Little Liars watching with my Lil mama bought upon some great conversation and as I fell asleep last night this is what I thought of again. So I wanted to talk about it with you.

Here's is a BIG question...

Should I admit I don’ have all the answers? I don’t really know everything after all?
Would it be so terrible of me to actually “be human”?

My perspective is that once we can freely admit that just because we are parents we don't have special powers that allow us to know everything we are better able to communicate with our kids and find out the answers, Together.

My twenty one years of non stop talks have bought about many learning lessons indeed. I wasn't afraid to admit I didn't know everything and I wasn't afraid to ask for help or look things up. Topics ranging from drugs to body development to self esteem and sexuality we have touched it all. We survived because we did the following:

-we made time to talk daily
-we showed each other respect
-we didn't turn our talks in lessons
-we used age appropriate language

Communication is key, our kids need to feel and know that regardless of how uncomfortable something may be they can come to us and talk things through and if we can't help we will help them in getting the right answers...together. Today there are so many pressures and so much available information, as parents it is our responsibility to make sure our kids are getting the right information.

Parenting is a journey, there is no right or wrong answer all the time. Parents don't have all the answers and that is totally ok. Next time your kid comes up to you and asks you a question take the opportunity to talk about how you felt at that age when you too had questions and didn't know who to turn to for the answers. Never forget you were that same age once.

What do you think? Is this something we should admit and start a conversation with our kids about? Is admitting we don't know it all a bad thing?

Becoming a Better Listener

Good Morning, hope all my dolls are doing well. We are all still trying to figure out how to deal with all these events taking place one after another. Seems the abundance of hate is never ending. These days have got me thinking about some stuff.

I have a real bad habit and I just can't seem to shake it. I constantly interrupt when I'm in a deep conversation. Not because I don't care about what you are saying, not because I want to "win" simply because I am impatient. This has been a problem for me for many years and it wasn't until I started to practice Mindfulness, Yoga and Meditation that I was able to acknowledge that character defect. I was able to say out loud "lady you have a problem".

When you know better you do better, it doesn't mean you won't have slip ups it just means you can catch yourself faster so you can correct the behavior and stay on track.

Lately I have had some major fails, I chalk it up to having a lot on my plate but that isn't an excuse. We all have tons of responsibilities to juggle and that shouldn't cover up poor behavior. I've had to apologize on a few occasions which I'm not to happy about. Not the apologizing part, if I'm wrong I'm wrong but about having to apologize in the first place when all that was required was for me to slow down and practice what I have learned.

The following are a few things I learned through my research and try to practice daily...

-listen as if your life depended on it. If you try this you will see that rushing to get your say in can really wait after all. No one is rushing towards death.

-listen without already have a response in mind. When you do this you aren't paying attention to the other persons feelings.

-make eye contact. When you look someone in eyes you can have empathy because you can see the emotions they are feeling as they speak. You can also stay present and focused.

-create a "safe" environment. Shut the gadgets off, sit in a quiet place. Distractions are harmful to great communication.

-love & respect. Remind yourself the goal is a resolution. You want to walk away with clarity and not build more confusion.

These are the most frequent ones I use but the link I am sharing has a broader list and explanations. It may help you next time you don't do your best to listen and behave like a jerk as I have recently. Baby steps one day at a time we are all a work in progress and we can only correct ourselves.

What poor communication skill(s) do you have that keep causing you trouble? What tools are you using to try to get better?

Take the Blinders Off!

Good Morning loves, hope everyone is living their best selves. I had a different post I wanted to share today but recent news events changed my mind. I want to touch on a few things without ranting but instead sparking a pause in your life and some rational thoughts. Mothers and Fathers we owe that to our children.

Let me begin with the circus that is Donald Trump.
I can't say enough that I am not a political person, never have been. I just believe in fairness however we achieve it. What ever "party" is going to be fair is fine with me, I am still confused as to how we are the "United States" and have such huge division in politics to begin with. How instead of finding a balance its all or nothing at the expense of many. That is not "United" to me. I became more mindful of debates and such when my daughter became really interested in the Obama run.

She would have us sit and watch and discuss them afterwards. It made me take my blinders off at this countries racists views and proud of it attitude. It may not be in your face per say but it was and is there. It's always the same sentence, "I'm not racist I have such and such friends." Just because you say you have a "friend" doesn't mean you view them as your equal.

Respectful of the Republican Party, how can you in your right conscious vote for a man who is clearly spreading hate and fear? Who promotes division and smiles at you as he does it? Who says he will make this a better country but you may not be part of making it better because though you may also be a republican he is talking about your family or your country of origin. How do you stand by that? Are pride and ego more valuable than actual human lives? Does the end justify the means?
nytimes.com
What do you think? Would you rather follow just because that is what you associate with or would you instead try something new?

My next light the match is the story of the Stamford sexual assault case.
Assaulting anyone for any reason is unfortunate in itself but sexual assault for me has an extra sting. Anyone can recover from a punch in the face or a real bad beating but a violation of your body so personal lives on forever. No matter how much time passes you always carry it with you. I can't image how that must feel but I can empathize. So to read and hear this young man's father try to brush under the rug "20 minutes of actions" as if it was or is nothing is sickening. Her life has value just like he thinks his sons does. A sentence as light as what he received is an additional slap in the face to the victim.
cnn.com

Which brings me to my perspective that certain people can get away with some things and others can't. White privilege.
Some people can say whatever they like and its taken as a joke or behave in a certain way and a blind eye is turned. This link I'm sharing shows us a different outcome to a "sexual assault" I want you to share what you think cbsnews.com

Lastly, I want to acknowledge the transition of Muhammed Ali. I never watched him fight or sat and watched an old fight but I have watched some of his interviews and what sticks with me is his strength. Not as a fighter, but as a man. A man who never wavered in his beliefs. A man who never went with what was popular but instead with what was right, at any cost. From his refusal to enlist to getting rid of his Olympic Gold Medal, his strength shined from within. Equality, respect, love and kindness those are the words that come to mind when I think of him. How can I be "good enough" in your eyes for one thing but not in another? That is the question he always made you think about.

Take the Blinders off, question your beliefs. Were they handed down to you from your family? Did you come to these conclusions on your own? Is there room for change, is there room for new questions? Start a conversation.

Is it Worth a Revisit?

Mother's Day is fast approaching and as most are scrambling to get the perfect gift or plan the perfect meal there are some who only have memories. Some whose mom is no longer with them and this day reminds them of all those great times and years shared. They wish they could have more time with her and bring her up to date on their latest life events and then there may be a few like me...

The ones who have a mom that is still living but they have no connection to. The mom that with time they just have lost touch with and have grown in separate directions. The mom that even though you can recall some good times the bad times seem to overshadow even those fond memories.

I am at an age where I can recall my life and look at things from a different perspective. Being a mother now myself and being as close as I am with my own daughter there are just certain things I can't understand even when I continue to try. No amount of time can clear up for me the disconnect between a parent and a child.

I try to remember my mother as the woman she was before she remarried. The music blasting, party going, always smiling mom. The awesome dresser, the commanding look at me when I walk in the room, the life is beautiful and I am happy to be here mom. The hard working we gonna make it mom. The confident all is possible mom. I never like to sit too long thinking about the other mom. The one who got her spark sucked out of her during an over a decade marriage. The one who stopped making Lemonade at of lemons.

My mom raised me as a single parent till I was in middle school and then she remarried. I thought if she was happy I was cool but after a while what I realized was that unhappy people like to drag happy people down. They don't think half full to them everything is half empty. They don't see any up side to them everything is down hill. They don't see possibilities they only see obstacles. Even a saint in these circumstances can loose some of its faith. Two kids later and finally a divorce she was and hasn't been the same ole mom ever again.

Here we are so many years later she is now in her early 60's and suffering from Emphysema. I would say the last ten years have been filled with many ups and downs. Long stretches of time gone without exchanging a word followed by an emergency that brings us together only to then slowly walk away again. After a while you just learn to respect the path that those around you have chosen and if it doesn't have enough room for you, you learn to walk away. Difficult people stuck in misery and stubborn habits don't do well with those who present options.

So here I am close to another Mother's day thinking "should I reach out to her? should I try to open the lines of communication again? should I put aside all past attempts and approach them with a new set of eyes?" My daughter and I went to a Prince memorial gathering in Harlem, NYC a few days ago. We had a wonderful time and ended the evening with great conversation and a lovely dinner. On our drive back I thanked her for joining me and she said "of course mom, I don't understand kids and parents not investing time with one another it's not like you will always be around so I have to make the most of our time while you are still here."

Make the most of our time while you are still here, wow what a statement. Guess I have a few days to think about this.

What do you think? Is there someone in your life that you have had to walk away from for whatever reason and you feel it is time to try and revisit? How many attempts should be made to repair a damaged relationship? Should only one person make all the effort? What if the people you are dealing with only see things as winning or loosing, I am right and you are wrong? Share your thoughts, experiences and or comments.

Honoring our History Truthfully

Good Morning! Happy Sunday to all and I truly hope we all had an awesome productive week.

I have had several teaching moments this week I want to chat about. The first one was looking through some old drafts I have saved and just left alone because of FEAR. As I reread them I was surprised at how much I had shared and how open I had been about my opinions and experiences on certain issues. I guess that is the reason they are still in my draft folder...because they are too REAL.

That brings me to my second lesson and that came to me through a wonderful conversation I had midweek with the lovely Kesha from Uncommonchick.com. Her brand focuses on living your best Extraordinary Life, your Truth and facing your Fears. Our phone conversation was very informative and encouraging. Just the right push I needed to continue working on my own true path. Go check her out it is full of humor and lots of love.

My third lesson ties in with the first two and that was this news clip I came across in regards to information in a school textbook.

A ninth grader working on his school World Geography/History lesson came across misrepresentation of a major part of our Geography/History. He showed it to his mother and his mother chose to step forward instead of hiding back. The lesson was on Slavery and Slaves being described as "Workers" and not being truthful on depicting the forced migration. She was able to contact the publishers to make some adjustments but as she pointed out that won't be enough in the long run.
http://news

That made me think of the countless times my daughter would comment on similar things while she was growing up and doing her own home work. When she was in elementary school and would talk to me about what she was learning in her own History classes or Science class or English class. How during her years in H.S. she would comment on it being more acceptable to actually disagree and question some of the things she had read growing up and how today when she sits with me and speaks about her College classes she still refers to her younger years as a time of being taught lies.

As a parent I surely don't want to hear this and have no idea on even how to go about making any changes but this mom in this article showed me that in just acknowledging it and speaking about it something can be done even if just in your home or with your peers.
For so long we have allowed so many truths to be swept under the rug and for so many people to be devalued. For so long we have continued to just go along with the program as if the program wasn't flawed.

When as parents we continue to allow our children to believe the things they read and hear knowing they are not true we are not being good parents. We may not be able to go back and have every textbook rewritten but we can surely start educated conversations at home. We can discuss with more knowledge and better tools subject matters that we know more information about today.

We know now that many of the lessons in textbooks about Native Americans and Spanish Explores for example do not paint the whole picture. We also know that depending on where you grow up and what you are able to have access to is what allows you to become more educated and again give all people the value they deserve.
Allowing our children to question and form their own opinions is priceless. We should never extinguish that light or tenacity.

So what can we do as parents to ensure that what our children are learning and what we are investing our hard earn money on is of value? I certainly won't suggest we actually read our kids textbooks ourselves because most of us just don't have that sort of time but I will suggest the following:

-have daily wrap up conversations on what they have learned in school that day
-encourage them to share on a particular lesson and hear their take on it
-keep things lite, don't be overbearing in your delivery of what your take is but instead encourage additional research
-go on dates to the library or museums
-sit with your child on the computer and research together
-make learning fun
-teach them respect and to value all human life
-encourage them to learn about other cultures and religions so that they may respect even if they don't agree
-encourage free thinking. they don't have to believe everything the Teacher says, they should feel they have the right to question and do so with respect

These are just a few suggestions there are many many ways to help our children become better informed. These suggestions and tools can very well be carried over to our personal lives as well. Sometimes as we become adults we tend to try and sugar coat or wash away our past mistakes and history. We begin to omit certain parts of ourselves as we meet and begin to build with others but what we fail to understand and respect is that nothing in the end is hidden.

History whether its world or personal will always repeat itself if we don't learn the lessons in the mistakes left behind. We can't build on lies we have seen the results time and time again. We see it daily on the news in Corporations, we see it in human Suffering and we see it in our neighbors backyard.

I started my post with my comments on my draft folder and FEAR. I said I couldn't believe how REAL I had been so I imagine that must be the case with those that sit down to write about world events. Honoring our History Truthfully may not be easy but it is far less painful in the long run.

What do you think? Is teaching our children some of the harsh realities of life early on a good parenting skill or something we should try to avoid for as long as possible? Do you think that not questioning the education system is beneficial to our society? What are your thoughts on personal history? Is it ever ok to paint a different picture of our past?
Please stop to comment and share your thoughts, let's start a conversation.

Enough Milk to go Around

Good Morning my loves sitting in my office listening to the Jared "Subway" guy news smh omg! It just goes to show you never know with people.A lot of great topics in the news lately to chat about but today is milk day.
I never like to run into these types of pictures and stories one because they creep me out and two there is just so much more involved than right or wrong. Such a personal choice yet sometimes displayed in such an open manner.

My daughter and I spoke about this the other day and both agree that if you are old enough to walk, hold your food and even ask for it then you are way past sucking on any one's Tits be it your mothers or anyone else. If you think that the nourishment aspect of your choice is why you would have a child past the age of one hanging on your boobs that is great but can you at least pump it out or use a little more discretion?

There is nothing wrong with breast feeding just so we are clear but there is a little more to think about once the kid hits the walking stage. If your kid is in the playground on a play date and walks over to you and says I'm hungry and you whip out your boobs I think of psychological issues. I think about how this kid will be made fun of and how silly he/she looks standing there sucking on your breast.
Then there's the side of sharing your milk with another child that is not your own....again so many factors to consider. The use of Wet NurseWet Nurse defined is something that has been around for a very long time and perhaps it may still have its uses but I can't imagine that when this was thought of they could ever imagine people posting pictures up while it was taking place. After all one if its original uses was for the women of higher stature to keep their discretion.

I find this recent story a bit creepy and here is why...
Breast feeding encourages bonding and no where in this story was I clear that the mother wasn't able to do so naturally just that she wasn't available. Well if she works then she should pump, many women do this again this story just wasn't very clear. Medical reasons are one thing but just not having the time is another.
I have seen and read the references made to Selma Hayek when she did the same and again I thought yes this is a loving helpful thing to do but you could have pumped.

An old girlfriend of mine breast feed all three of her kids and yes some past the age of three which again most of us just didn't understand the whipping out the boob in the middle of a conversation thing but we respected it, we just wished she would have respected us by not being so in our faces.
I had a really tough time breast feeding my own lil mama I barely did several months. The act itself was brutal on my nipples and I just couldn't take the pain anymore. We did the pumping for a while and that was cool but I can't imagine having my girlfriend who I mentioned above feeding my little girl....thanks but no thanks. And if for some reason I wasn't producing at all and I was dead set on breast milk then I would have asked her to pump.

So two issues at hand:
1- how long should you breast feed?
2- is it ok to breast feed another person's child?

As you look at these pictures and you read some stories, what do you think? Share your own breast feeding journey and or thoughts.

Willing

I love when a poem or a song is so detailed and clear there is nooooooo way you can't get the message. I love that if you are shy or not good with expressing emotions there are so many tools you can gravitate to for some help.

Today I am going to chat a bit about expecting things from others that we ourselves may not be giving or willing to give. I've shared some of my experiences with dating again after years of being out of the game, back in the game then out again. I have plenty of treats coming your way but today let's start with Willing.

Ready, eager and prepared to do something is the definition but do we apply it to the way we approach connecting in relationships? When we as women begin to connect with men are we prepared and ready to compromise and communicate honestly and openly. Same question for men, are you ready and prepared to lay your cards down, to talk to listen?

Our Willingness to bare our souls and to not let pasts failures creep into our now is tough at times, I won't lie I work on some of these daily myself. Dating in today's rules hasn't been easy but it's been totally doable because of my willingness to be clear. I am looking forward to connecting with someone who enjoys me, all of me. Yes dating can be a hit or miss sometimes a few misses more than a hit but I refuse to become jaded and say I am ok staying single. Why should I? I am still young and have a lot to offer. I actually feel sad for people of a certain age when I hear them speak and sound as if they have thrown in the towel. Why? You mean to tell me you are so set in your ways you are no longer eager to try connecting with someone else?

You mean to tell me no one can meet your standards? How high are you setting them, are they even realistic and would you meet those same standards if someone was measuring you by them? Don't get my words twisted, I am not saying aim low or reduce, I am saying compromise, be ready to give other options a try. Don't expect or ask for something you yourself are not giving, that's all.

I love this artist I am about to share on, Jill Scott. Her words move and inspire, uplift and question, show and tell. I am so glad that a friend of mine reminded me of her latest work and bought this track/interlude to my attention. It touches exactly what I mean about willing to give what you want to get. Willing to be clear and laying things out.

You want me flawless
You want me patient
And sweet
You want me willing
You want my honesty
You want me to be
Appreciative
Respect your space
Ignore your fears
You want spontaneity
A good girl and a freak
You want loyalty

You want something that you’re not willing to be

Expecting me to be loyal
Expecting me to be faithful

What do you think? Do you agree that you need to have equal expectations? Do you feel you should get more than you give? Do you believe that after a certain age there is just no point in dating? Let's start a conversation, tell me what you think.

And I wasn't Disappointed

Happy Hump day!!! Picture me blowing a horn. Some are complaining about the heat wave we are in the middle of but noooooo not me. Bring it on, I just finally was able to erase those memories of shoveling my car out of the snow. I am making the most of this summer regardless what comes my way and speaking of what has come my way....

I had a great opportunity not to long ago to take a break from my grandma duties if even for a few hours and go meet one of my man crushes. I have several but this one has been on going since 1999.
He is as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside and talking to and with him is inspiring, uplifting, informative and freeing. I was fortunate enough to meet Tyrese!!!
Yes ladies, that Tyrese sing to me "Lately", kiss on me "Baby Boy", shot down the Decepticon's in "Transformer's movies", drive fast and say the silliest things "Fast and Furious franchise" Tyrese!

I got the chance to join him at a meet and greet in Brooklyn thanks to a friend of mine. What a blast.
He discussed several things, he really is a talker but I am too so I didn't mind. It beats meeting someone you have admired and them turning out to be a total jerk. He shared his journey spoke about family, love, life, and being comfortable with who you are once you have found clarity. He spoke about his music and his acting career, his passion for new possibilities and of course his love and respect for Paul Walker. He shared his views on parenting and the importance of Co-Parenting in a civil manner. His court struggles and the disservice bitter x's project on their children. I even asked questions about the songs on his new album (which btw I totally love) and I wasn't disappointed.
He answered mine and every other question very specifically and clear.

Ladies he confirmed that with anything in life as long as you have great communication anything is possible. There are great men and women out there you just have to know what you want and put yourself in the place to find them. And his smile is not bad at all, it truly melts you away. I was happy to have been a part of his last album promotional stops. When you decide to end something important in your life it should reflect the love you had for it and the joy it bought you. It should be the best you have to offer and this album totally reflects all of that and more.
compliments of 103.9 in NYC yes that's me on the right!!!

Tyrese, thank you for sharing your space with me and with so many others. It has been a pleasure to watch your growth and development. I look forward to your future endeavors for I know you still a lot more to offer this world.

So lovelies if you get the opportunity to meet someone you have loved from a distance I hope you grab it with both hands and I hope it isn't a disappointment.

Always stress free xo.

I too want to scream at Your kid sometimes

Hey dolls! Everyone enjoying their Summer? I am! I have been deleting all things Back to School that I see in my inbox sorry if you were one of those I am just not ready for another school year yet. Life moves fast as it is without us speeding it up more than necessary and yes my baby is grown and I don't really need to worry about back to school but guess what...I do, it's called tuition bill coming soon. That's why I am not rushing it I would love for it just to be about pencils and notebooks but its bigger than that so in the meantime I will totally continue to just enjoy my warm weather and push away school stuff for a little bit longer thank you lol.

So let's see so many things going on in the news that I want to chat about I had to make a list to keep me focused. Open discussions and dialogue are my favorite things but sometimes emotions, even mine can get in the way of growth and learning.

Today I want to chat about our Maine neighbors and the "Diner drama". So many things have been said and written I see both sides and they both have merit. This is my take...
No one has the right to just yell at another person's child BUT when what is going on with Your child invades My space then the rules change.

From the Diner Owner's side:
-she offered options
-has right to provide quality service for ALL customers
-has right to take matters into her own hands in her establishment for the greater good
-has right to an opinion and to comment
-does not have the right to yell at a customer...period
-doesn't have to deal with crying kids for lengthy amount of time

From the Parent's side:
-have the right to take their child anywhere they wish
-have the right to respectful and courteous service
-have the right to raise their child as they wish
-should have taken child outside earlier
-should be more mindful of their child's needs

To summarize my thoughts from the information I have gathered...

As a mother I would never wait around for over 30 minutes to be served anywhere especially with a small child and then another 40 minutes for service? That is insane and irresponsible, especially for food if your child is hungry or if you (parent) didn't even bring things to keep your child busy. They are not like us they get fussy and impatient, heck I am an adult and can't sit around too long waiting for my food when I am hungry.

The mom claimed the diner was noisy? Hello! it's a Diner, people gather around table talking and laughing having fun while eating their food. It is not a restaurant setting where the volume tends to be less animated. If your child can't deal with large crowds and noise it is your responsibility as the parent to know where you can take your child so they feel comfortable. No one knows my child better than me and if my choices cause an issue and my poor judgment brings about discomfort to other's then I am totally to blame and I should own up to my part of the responsibility.

As a mother whenever my daughter would start to show signs of uncomfortableness and I saw a crying session coming I would wet a napkin with warm water pass it round her face excuse myself and take her outside. Why would I want to cause a scene? Why should anyone have to deal with my crying child? I don't want to deal with any one's crying child and I shouldn't have too. I would definitely give you a look or possibly even walk over and see what we can do.

That the Diner owner was out of line with the yelling is a given. That was disrespectful in general I don't care about the age. People being upset about the fact it was a child is sort of silly in general as if kids get a free pass. Discipline your kids period and someone else won't feel the need to do it for you. Handle your biz and no one else will have to step into your space. Everyone doesn't have a filter that is why you are responsible for your child in public places at all times. That the language she used may not be how we would have handled matters? ok I get that, poor judgement period.

In over 20 years of parenting I too have found myself on both sides of that diner drama. Not necessarily exactly like that but in parks with bully kids or kids just running crazy period. Parents on the phone or reading while their kid grabbed my kid's toys, parent bringing kid to a birthday party doing them and not paying attention to their child's behavior. Going into a grocery store and having to deal with running kids in the aisles. So many stories so many ways to handle a situation. I have definitely raised my voice to another person's child and I wouldn't have an issue if vice verse as long as you are mindful of your words and don't touch my child. No one sets out wanting to discipline another person's children but if you aren't around to do it or if you neglect to do it properly in someone else's space again...it is bound to happen.

I think the lesson we should all take away the bigger picture per say is we as parents must make better choices when taking our kids out to eat in public places. We must be better prepared to tend to their needs and we must take proper actions to keep all party's involved as comfortable as possible.
They are our responsibility, it is up to us to take care of them properly. No business is responsible to make your child comfortable. Good service safe environment yes period.

To the diner owner...I am not mad at you but I do think perhaps in the future you may want to be more mindful of your words. Your language is not one that resolves matters but instead instigates more negativity. I think your energy would be best served invested in matter that opens communication, understanding, respect and resolution end of the day if it was another person with a different personality I am sure things would have ended very differently. I know for me they would have.

What do you think? Is it solely the responsibility of a parent to control their child in public places? As a business owner am I responsible for keeping your child calm and cooperative during their stay? Would you say something to someone else's child? Does it depend on circumstances or just never?
Please share your thoughts.
